Historical information

  The Ischia island

The Ischia island is the biggest one in the Gulf of Naples; thus of volcanic origin, it still shows traces of the earthquakes and eruptions suffered in the past centuries, particularly visible in its really luxurious vegetation and in its thermal water springs as well that reach the surface enriched by healthy substances. Quite surely it was first a Phoenicia, then a Greek and finally a Roman colony and always represented one of the preferred places of leading personalities of history, science and today of politics, show business and intellectual arts who are fascinated by its ancient and mysterious charm.

Thanks to its multiform morphology the Island moulded the nature of its inhabitants: fishermen and sailors on the seashore, peasants on the hills and the slopes of the mountains: people who were far away from the dry land and were forced over the centuries to develop the right way to survive during Saracen pirates’ raids as well as the domination wars.

Between Porto and Ponte

The Porto (Harbour) originated by an extinct crater, subsequently filled up with water, that formed a natural lake.

Ferdinando II of the Bourbon Dynasty decided to let it open towards the sea. So, after its opening in 1854 the new Harbour of Ischia became eventually the most important one on the island.

On the contrary, the ancient sailors’ village, Ponte, keeps the deepest memories of the island: from the Greek settlement to the position in the Bay of Cartaromana where Romans gave shelter to their vessels and scanned, from the high Castello, the naval movements in the Gulf on Naples; from the Byzantines to the Lombards; from the Normans to the Spaniards and to the Aragoneses. Anyway, the island was at the mercy of Naples fate, thus representing an important goal for each conqueror.

However, the name of Ponte was due to the bridge binding the Island to the real Aragona Castle (Castello Aragonese), a huge powerful rock emerging from the sea and showing its unassailable character.
